Meeting Mother!

It had always been a dream to meet “Mother”. She has taken care of her boys in rough weather and inhospitable conditions, gave them a deck to fly off and rain hell on enemies and hover back to safety of her hangars. She could carry 2100 men and supplies at 28knots and in wartime scenarios, she had commando transport facilities for 750 men and a fleet of 26 aircrafts, all ready to take the fight to the enemy. She is none other than the erstwhile INS Viraat.

The flight deck of INS Viraat

INS Viraat has served the Indian Navy since 1986 and has been formally decommissioned in 2017. After serving for 3 decades, now she is docked at the navy docks of Mumbai.
Due to some friends, I got a rare opportunity to take a tour of the ship. The first thought was… she’s huge. HUGE! I haven’t been on any other carriers yet, so I can’t compare, but she’s bigger than any machine I have ever seen. True, there is rust on her LCVPs, and all armaments are gone, but it hasn’t done anything at all to reduce the grandiose of the ship.

We climbed up to the deck and it was a feeling beyond expressions. For the first time, in a long time, I felt elated. I stood there, slowly gulping in the feeling, I was standing on the deck of one of biggest machines that exist in the world. We walked the entire length of the deck and then climbed down to the hangar. A single sea harrier adorns the floor today, but once upon a time, there would be a total of 26 aircrafts and helicopters. I was interested to go to the boiler rooms too but then, that takes quite a while, so the idea was parked for a later visit someday.

I did not take my camera along, not knowing the permissions that I may be given. Had the mobile phone though 🙂

This was an experience that shall be in my heart for ever.

Me and a few friends, we went on a trip a few weeks earlier. An account of that shall follow soon.

Till then, cheers and Happy Diwali to all.

The face of God

The phrase, seeing is believing holds true for the majority of the population. To believe, one needs to have an image, a face to relate it to.

To the thousands, who visited the Lokhandwala Pandal during the Durga Puja this year, god looked like this.

Next up shall be one about a break from the daily grind and a breath of fresh air.

Pupper Party, Mumbai

Wouldn’t it be just wonderful if we had a casual congregation of loads of dogs and their owners and both species could socialize???
I believe this is the thought the organizers of the Pupper Party had in their minds.

In what appeared to be a ramp up to the Pet Fed celebrations in December, at Mumbai, the Pupper Party was organized by the Pet Fed at SamBar Pub & Kitchen, Khar, Mumbai.
There were about forty dogs, Gunda, Oreo, Bitsy, Poshto, Magic…and so many more, followed, dragged, chased by and along with their owners all around the property. One could hear barks, howls and the occasional,”Who’s a good boy??” from the crowd. We all know who’s the good boy right???

There was a meal made ready for the guests, dog food, ice creams, treats. And there was also beer for the handlers.
There were numerous games to play customized for the puppies, the tiny ones and the big ones.

It was interesting to see strangers become friends over the shared love for the dogs. No doubts, there were a few loud barks here and there and the owners running around apologizing everywhere, in all, I found the event quite interesting and am really looking forward to the PetFed Mumbai scheduled in December 2017.

Till the next post,
Cheers!!!

Ganesh Visarjan, Mumbai, 2017

Undoubtedly, Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh Puja as you may call it, is the biggest and the most grand event every year pan Maharashtra. The entire week pujas are held in the pandals, and then, on the designated day, the grand murtis are paraded through the city and then immersed in the waters of either the ocean, or a river or big lakes. Here, in Mumbai, Juhu chowpatty and Girgaum chowpatty are famous for the visarjan ceremonies.

Along with the idols, there are throngs of crowd all along the way. The spectators cheer and give the god a proper sendoff. The chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!! Mangalmurti Morya!!” fill the air quite often.

Dense crowd awaits the arrival of the Ganesh Idol for Visarjan

Me and a friend, we were at Chinchpokli, waiting to catch a glimpse of two of the most famous idols in the city….

and Chinchpokli cha Chintamani (Chintamani of Chinchpokli)

Despite the crowd and the shoving and pushing, it was quite an amazing experience. I must add, this event, this visarjan coverage, also served as the field test for my newly acquired Nikon D7200. I had been meaning to buy this camera since quite some time, and now that I own it, I am absolutely in love with it. The quick 6fps burst in the CH mode, ensures that no frames are missed. The best bit of it all, my 50mm prime lens, auto focuses on this body.

Let me know how you find the results.

Until next time,

Cheers!!

Mumbai Nightscape Encore

A few weeks back, I posted a few photos of the city of Mumbai, at night, shot using a Lenovo K6 Power here. The photos were not of the quality that I would have wanted, hence, a few days back, when the opportunity presented itself, I was there with the camera. The location, the terrace floor of L&T Realty Crescent Bay.
We waited from dusk to nightfall and thankfully, it didn’t rain this certain evening.

Long Exposure shot of Wadala and Freeway, Mumbai, India

The next post, dear readers, I shall introduce you to something new. Do keep an eye out, the post shall be up soon!

Cheers!

The night cityscape : Mumbai

It has been close to 4 months that I have returned to Mumbai, and most of the posts that have gone up since then, have something or the other related to the tall buildings. This post has more of the same, except there is one major difference today. The shots here, have been taken at NIGHT!

Mumbai Cityscape at night

I had been planning for a view from up top for quite a while now, and this gave me a satisfaction of sorts! Not that am totally happy with it, but now, you, my dear reader know what to expect, as I take my camera along, soon.

Mumbai Cityscape at night, Bandra Worli Sealink

Come to think of it, now, in Mumbai, instead of saying that the elements of nature are air, water, earth and fire, it should be air, water, fire and concrete! Just look at the buildings that have come up in the last few years!

Mumbai Cityscape at night, Freeway

For the ones who are uninitiated and are new to Mumbai, this ribbon here is the Freeway as it is called, which is basically a high speed motorway starting near Chembur, all the way till CST. The ride on the bridge is quite interesting, doesn’t beat the Sea Link though!

These shots have been taken using my Lenovo K6 Power. It boasts a 13MP camera and some smart modes. Then the photos have been tweaked on Snapseed. The results, are kinda interesting, for they give an idea of what can be achieved with the camera.

Keep an eye out for the HD version post, soon.

Cheers!!

Mumbai : Clouds and Rain

Hi there all,

As it must be evident by the sheer number of posts that I manage to post, I do not get a lot of time to pull out the camera and go shooting. Add to that the famed monsoons of Mumbai. Days of incessant rain, followed by a hot and humid sunny day, and then suddenly, out of no where, rain again, transient weather I say! Clothes damp and soggy, fungus just waiting to grow anywhere they can, it is difficult.

Not to be disheartened and following the concept of the best camera is the one you have on you, I turn to using the Lenovo K6 Power to shoot. Once better climates prevail, my beloved NikonD3100 shall come back in action.

Until the next post!

Cheers!!

The Ahmedabad Story

Ahmedabad, a big bustling city on the banks of the river Sabarmati is located in the western state of Gujarat in India. Home to more than 6 million people, it is also a city which is rich with history and stories.

Let me brush up on the history for a bit. Back in the 15th century, a ruler from the Delhi Sultanate, by the name Ahmed Shah became the leader of the city. In the later years, the Mughal ruler, Akbar conquered Gujarat and Ahmedabad became a thriving centre of trade and commerce. Later on, in the mid 18th century, Ahmedabad was surrendered to the Marathas. The Marathas fought over the precious piece of land and managed to keep it under their control, until the mid of 19th century when the British moved in and established an army cantonment in the city. With increase in trade and technology, textile industry took off and Ahmedabad came to be known as the Manchester of the East. Over time, freedom struggles and a stable government, Ahmedabad has grown to become one of the fastest growing cities of the decade and one of the best cities to live in, in India.

On a trip to the NIRMA University in the city, a thought intrigued me, what happened to the dynasty, the bloodline, are they still rulers somewhere? Or have they all perished! I wished it be that they would still be there and maybe meet them too. For a photo story shoot, a bunch of us, went to the Swami Narayan Temple in the heart of the city.
As I walked around the place, I saw loads of people, and found it to be a nice opportunity to talk to them a bit, get to know the place and also take a few photos.

As I wandered about, camera in hand, I heard the unmistakable sound of a sewing machine, and went right in, to have a chat with the man who was working with a lot of concentration on a piece of cloth. We talked about his work, and his past. At the mention of the past, he appeared a tad bit sad, and said that things are not the same anymore. Yes, I did find it a little strange, but well, I decided to moved on. As I was leaving, he calls out to me and says, “Once upon a time, my wife would command slaves, today she sells vegetables and my son, he makes kite reels! This is what misfortune does to you! I would have been a king back in the old days, but this is all that has remained today”. Needless to say, I had to find the vegetable seller lady, and maybe the son too.

Some search yielded results!

The lady, accompanied with her grand daughter could be found at a local market. It seemed that she commanded a lot of respect amongst the other sellers in the vicinity. I asked, who is she. And the reply came, in a nervous jest, “You don’t know, she is the queen…the queen of the sabji mandi (vegetable market)”, and there was some laughter around. She didn’t look very amused, while the girl retorted, in the choicest of words that some day the fortunes shall  turn and they would serve her, and her brother.

From the other corner of the market, there came some sounds of commotion. One of the shopkeepers swears, looks at me, says with some contempt, “That’s the king we are supposed to serve if the fortunes turn? No damn way”. There was just one thought in my head, this can’t be happening! I rushed to the site of the commotion, and realize that its a street side kite making shop. A man is applying the coatings on the reel (Maanja) while the other one was rolling it. It seemed some altercation had taken place. Nothing I can do there, nor talk much. The guys seemed ready to fight, more than willing than to talk about some what ifs.
As the call for wrap was being sounded, right near where our bus was parked, I saw a boy, another vegetable seller. He had a poise, a gaze and an attitude that made it impossible to ignore and walk away. As I talk to him, he asks me various questions, where I was from, what I did and so on. He was fascinated by the camera, and I showed him the photos. He exclaimed that I met his grandparents and sister. As I bought a carrot from him, he said he has a secret, that no one believes! He said, that he is destined to be a ruler! I smiled, paid my due, and took a photo, but before I left, I asked, “Whats your name”?

He looked straight at me, with a hint of pride in a winsome smile, came the reply, “Ahmed Shah”!

There may be elements of fiction in my account, and in case I got the facts wrong, correct me, I shall be grateful. If I have hurt someone with my account of the trip, please feel free to contact me with your grievances. I cannot claim that all the characters here are fictitious or that any resemblances are coincidental!

Chor Bazaar Encore

One of my oldest friends, Tanaya is in town for her internship, and from the day she saw my post on the Chor Bazaar of Mumbai, last year, she wanted to go.
So, after loads of requests and tantrums, we went! She was besides herself and got herself a pretty hourglass and a compass. What mattered the most was that we got some photos, of which we would definitely be proud of.
Old Typewriter

Polaroid Camera in Front of Vases

The thing about the Mumbai Chor Bazaar is that, more than smuggled goods, you can find old and used goods or very accurate copies. You may have a vintage typewriter and may have damaged a key, head over here, and you shall definitely find a replacement.

Types of old police whistles

Various camera lenses for sale on the roadside

Shops sell all kinds of stuffs! Whistles, bells, wheels, timepieces, clocks, watches, etc.

Old camera multiple lenses

Cameras lined on the shelf inside a shop

There’s one particular shop on the Mutton Street which has a collection of vintage cameras. No guarantees on the working conditions, but, amazingly mesmerizing collections. The dual lens reflex ones, old generations of SLRs, video cameras galore the shelves, and lenses. Manual prime and zoom lenses of varied focal lengths. Most shall invariably be damaged or dirtied beyond usable condition, but they look damn pretty! No doubts there!

A shop with various merchndises

A shop with various merchandise from Walkman to Playstation

The above photos struck me as a time lapse of sorts! One can spot walkmans, old dvds, a portable TV, and also Playstations and digital cameras! This is what I love about the chor bazaar, the sheer diversity of merchandise up for sale.

The following photo was taken last year:
Cameras and a mic.

And this one, this year!

Not a lot has changed I believe.

Like I said last year, If you come to Mumbai, and want to get yourself some antique stuffs, the Chor Bazaar on Mutton Street, Mumbai is the place to be. Have a list of things that you are looking for, or else, you might return spending way more than you planned, and have you craving for more.

Until the next time.

Take care all.

Cheers!!

Decks on the table!

They named it, Homecoming Of Terror! If you know what am talking about, it ll make you happy that the season 5 is up and available already. We join Underwood family as the hunt for the ‘one that got away continues’ in the brand new season of House of Cards. The season has been a highly rewarding watch, with the ins and outs of politics, often dirty, being portrayed just the way they are. The cutthroat competition, the zeal to move ahead, no matter what, and all that goes behind the scenes to make a whip, a president.

What follows here, may spoil your suspense, so proceed at your own risk, you have been warned!

“I will NOT yield” is what the president says to the Congress and he sticks to his word. A smart man is one, who knows the play, has something to trade, is one step ahead of the game, and drives the game, or terror, whatever you name it here. He gets heckled at the congress and cursed at the funeral, she said, “I hope you die, and she becomes the president”, but he stays true…he does not yield. He ensures that he has the final word and let’s the people know, in person, that they shall be safe. This is a no holds, all out war. War against terror. There are parties at play, who cant back away from the war on terror, but also want to persecute the president for his crimes! Best bit, the President knows it all. This is not all, LeAnn seems to be rattled about something and so does Aidan! What are they so scared of? Or rather who are they so afraid of? Only one way to find out!

The deck of cards is out on the table, the future is uncertain and it shall be a winner takes all!

Still going strong in the 5th season, HOC is absolutely killing it out there with the amazing portrayal of the politics and drama that enshrouds the Underwood family.

Frank Underwood is coming to India with the television premiere of House Of Cards Season 5 on Saturday, 3rd June, 5 PM onwards, only on Zee Café!

On a lighter note, let me show you something….Once upon a time, I had made my House of Cards too.

This here is Aakash, one of my old buddies from college, carrying our house of cards to be put on display!

I would want to know of your views in the comments below.
